SUBMIT AN Interview
You Exec allows anyone to submit original interviews. When you submit an interview, you gain visibility to the thousands of executives that are our subscribers. Once your article is accepted, we will also promote it across hundreds of different forums, mailing lists, and channels that we manage. We also expect you to promote your own interview via your own channels. Articles are composed of 4-5 paragraphs, each paragraph with 70-100 words. Interviews should include actionable insights that our subscribers can apply in a professional setting.
Interviews can be: a summary of an interview with a recognized executive, a summary of a business-related editorial, or a business case-study you experienced. Interviews should focus on how individuals can become better managers, executives, and leaders. Below is a simple process you can use to write and submit your articles.
We suggest you contact an executive by email using a similar message - of course - please contextualize the message before sending it. It typically takes 8-10 emails to land an interview:
I am a big fan of yours. I have followed your career for a number of year and current work in the pharmaceutical industry. Aside from my work I always strive to learn how others have succeeded in their career.
If your schedule allows I am curious if I could chat with you for 10-15 minutes to learn about your thoughts on the future of our industry, and how you excelled at your company. On the side, I am also a contributor to You Exec - a service that helps others develop their careers. I feel if I could document your experiences in a short article it could help many professionals in our space.
If you have a phone conversation and you need to record the conversation, make sure to communicate to the executive that you are recording the conversation to help you write the article. Under no circumstances record a conversation without consent. Keep phone calls absolutely less than 30 minutes unless consent is given. While on the phone call, one quick way to check for consent is:
Peter - thank you for all your insights so far, you have been of tremendous help so far. I want to be respectful of your calendar as I see we have been chatting for X minutes so far. Is it OK if we chat for another 15 minutes.
Every 15 minutes repeat a version of the quote above. Under no circumstances speak for more than a minute straight. Overall, you should guide the conversation and only speak about 10% of the time. At the end of the conversation be extremely thankful and cordial. Try to end the conversation in the following manner:
Peter - thank you for sharing your insights and experiences with me. Your view of the industry has helped me grasp and better understand the space. For the purposes of You Exec, I wish to summarize what we have covered in a short memo - do you mind if I email you the memo just to get your thoughts before we send it to our subscribers?
Thank you - I really enjoyed this, and though I am early in my career if there is anything I can do for you to help you in any way please let me know, I am great at X, Y, Z...
