Some alternative approaches to strategic planning include scenario planning, real-time strategic planning, and emergent strategy. Scenario planning involves creating a variety of detailed narratives about possible future conditions to help guide decision-making. Real-time strategic planning involves continuously monitoring changes in the environment and adjusting strategies accordingly. Emergent strategy involves allowing strategy to develop organically in response to an evolving situation, rather than sticking to a rigid plan.

As a part of the study conducted under Reeves' leadership, executives' perceptions with objective measures of their actual environments were compared. A strong tendency to overestimate both factors was revealed as a result – over 80% of the executives said that "achieving goals depended on their own actions more than on things they could not control."
