The increasing use of AI for voice imitation and deepfakes can have several societal effects. One of the major concerns is the potential for increased identity theft and fraud. As AI becomes more sophisticated, it can be used to create convincing fake audio and video content, which can be used to deceive people or commit fraud. For instance, a bank manager in Hong Kong fell victim to a voice-deepfake that cloned the voice of a director at another company to authorize $35 million dollars in bank transfers. This was the second known case of AI voice cloning to carry out a heist, but the first successful one. Other potential effects could include the spread of misinformation or propaganda, and the undermining of trust in digital communications.
