The Kanban system was invented by Taiichi Ohno at the behest of Toyota CEO Kiichiro Toyoda. The system was designed to increase productivity by visually showing what stage a task is in and prompting viewers on which actions to take next in a process workflow. The goal was to produce only what is needed, when it is needed and in the amount needed. This was particularly important for Toyota as they were trying to compete with the productivity of American car companies in under three years, despite not having the same resources.
