There are several types of organizational charts, each with its own use. Hierarchical charts show the top-down structure of an organization, with the highest-ranking individuals at the top. Matrix charts display employees who report to more than one manager. Flat charts are used in organizations with few or no levels of middle management. Divisional charts show the structure of organizations that operate on a divisional basis, with each division functioning as a semi-autonomous unit. The use of these charts is to provide a clear picture of the reporting relationships, chains of command, and the overall structure of the organization.
