The main components of the stage-gate development process in product development are the stages and gates. The stages are where the actual work happens - these include activities like idea generation, preliminary screening, business case development, development, testing and validation, and launch. The gates are decision points that occur between each stage. At each gate, the progress and outcomes of the previous stage are evaluated, and a decision is made whether to proceed to the next stage, to recycle the project back to a previous stage for further work, or to terminate the project.
