What is SOP?

SOP stands for Standard Operating Procedure. It's a set of step-by-step instructions compiled by an organization to help workers carry out complex routine operations. SOPs aim to achieve efficiency, quality output and uniformity of performance, while reducing miscommunication and failure to comply with industry regulations. They are typically used in a professional context, where their aim is to outline the procedures that are necessary to complete tasks in accordance with industry regulations, provincial laws or just plain old corporate policy. SOPs can be found in all industries, but are particularly prevalent in pharmaceutical, medical, health care, military and government sectors.

Question was asked on:

The Standard Operating Procedure flow chart, or SOP, is one that might look familiar to those who work in larger teams. SOP clarifies the procedure and protocol that all team members should follow, so there's no confusion. Every company needs a way to get teams on the same workflow, and SOP flow charts remain the most popular way to do that. (Slide 14)
